The area where Milford is now located has long been known for its bountiful forests. The logging industry is the reason this area was originally settled, with the first mills opening as early as the 1680s.
The Kent County side of the town was the first to be settled. With the development of the logging industry and the growth of the United States, Milford turned to shipbuilding in the early and late 18th century.
In 1807 Milford was officially incorporated as a town. Its shipbuilding industry thrived until the last trees were cut in the early 20th century.
